The 2009 Bioneers Conference Performances: Poetry, Art, Dance and Performance
Sally Roesch Wagner, the executive director of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation,
is one of the first women to receive a doctorate for work in women's
studies and a founder of one of the country's first women's studies
programs. The author of numerous books and articles, she appeared as an
expert in the Ken Burns documentary "Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story
of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony."
Shailja Patel,
a multiple-award-winning Kenyan poet, artist and activist, has appeared
in venues ranging from NYC’s Lincoln Center to Durban’s Poetry Africa
Festival. She premiered her one-woman show “Migritude” at the World
Social Forum in Nairobi, then toured with it globally. Patel,
a 2009 African guest writer at the prestigious Nordic Africa Institute
in Uppsala, Sweden, also works with Kenyans for Peace, Truth and
Justice to empower grassroots Kenyan activists.
Koa Eagleton, eco-artist Koa Eagleton talks about his artistic process and philosophy working in partnership with his father Tanu Eagleton. The two world renown artists have participated in the conference for many years, creating breathtaking works in carved wood for the main stage as well as our yearly art auction.
Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company with Sarah Crowell, DESTINY (De-Escalation Skills Training Inspiring Nonviolence in
Youth) Arts Center exists to end isolation, prejudice and violence in
the lives of young people. Sarah Crowell, currently the program development director at Destiny Arts Center, has been with that vital organization for eighteen years, first as the performing arts
director and artistic director of its youth performance company, then
as executive director, and now has returned to programming and artistic
direction. Sarah danced with modern, jazz and dance/theater companies
in Boston and the Bay Area starting in 1984, including with Impulse
Jazz Dance Company and the Dance Brigade, and has performed both
nationally and internationally.
